Downtown SLO gets 'chained'

Downtown San Luis Obispo has seen a chain reaction in the past year. Well, a chain store reaction, that is.

In the past 12 months or so, the downtown area has seen about 15 new stores open, eight of which have been part of a chain. These include U.S. shopping mall favorites like Abercrombie & Fitch, California Pizza Kitchen, Talbots, Pottery Barn and more.

Car congestion causes concern on campus

This fall, the University Police Department won’t offer much new relief for students looking to park on campus.

“The situation this year is good and bad; good in that the same spaces will be available as when students left, but there won’t be any big improvements awaiting them,” said UPD Associate Director Cindy Campbell.

Student-run radio station plans to move on up

This year, Cal Poly’s radio station, KCPR 91.3 FM, will upgrade its studio and expand its coverage area. The station, which began broadcasting in 1968, is one of the only nonprofit college radio stations and is completely run by student volunteers.

The current studio is located on the second floor of building 26 and will be moved to the third floor next to the CPTV room.

Students come from far and wide to attend Cal Poly

New Year’s trumps Christmas by far. A school day lasts from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., not including homework. Parents are the ultimate deciders, even when they are wrong. And girls and boys rarely touch, although drinking is permitted in celebratory occasions as early as age 10.

Driven into debt – and does anyone care?

Ah, there is nothing like being in debt.

Every year when FAFSA time comes around, I have to start thinking about the upcoming year and the fact that I need to take out some loans to get me through the school year. I tell myself that debt is an investment, probably the same line other students in the same boat tell themselves.

Cal Poly's top 5 actually enjoyable G.E. classes

They may scare you, you may despise them and you may put them off for as long as possible, but sooner or later, you’ll have to confront them. That’s right, we’re talking about general education classes.

Although some general education classes may have an empty reputation, others out there aren’t so bad.

Rancer's Recipes – Not-So-Common Ramen Salad
