Poly environmentalists set out to 'Change It'

Greenpeace invited two Cal Poly students to attend a training conference for the country’s leading youth environmental activists called “Change It” in Washington, D.C. this summer.

Social sciences senior David Kirk and political science senior Lizzy LaMotte-Mitchell were named two of the top 100 youth environmental activists in the country by Greenpeace this summer.

Spam worm puts student information at risk

About 7,000 students may be affected by a “worm” that infected a computer system at Cal Poly.

On Oct. 3, the worm was identified in a system used in conjunction with campus telephone billing. Personal information was discovered on the system, which included names and Social Security numbers of students living in residence halls from 2001 to 2005.

Student's funeral to take place this week

A funeral for deceased student Edgar Viernes will take place tomorrow in Santa Clarita.

Viernes, an electrical engineering junior, died in a car accident of which he was the passenger on Oct. 12 when the driver swerved to avoid hitting a dog on Foothill Boulevard.

Storm drains installed around campus as reminder

Markers have recently been set up adjacent to Cal Poly’s storm drains to remind people that whatever goes down the channels ends up in San Luis Creek.

University recognized for green energy

Cal Poly is going green, and it has nothing to do with school spirit. The California State University system has set a goal of reducing energy use and utilizing more green power on all its campuses statewide to create a more sustainable system and prevent harm to the environment.

Circuit City, PetSmart land in SLO

Pet owners and electronics buffs alike will soon have more shopping choices in San Luis Obispo. A Circuit City and PetSmart, among others, are slated for construction as part of the Irish Hills Plaza, a 140,000-square-foot shopping center on Los Osos Valley Road, near The Home Depot and Costco.

Democratic club president takes on government

While the presidential election of 2004 may have turned some people away from politics, it sparked interest for Zach Austin. The political event led Austin to become politically conscious.

Austin found himself a liberal and a democrat dedicated to changing the current political structure, his reasons including the current administration’s catering to corporations, their unwillingness to check on Bush and disregard for America’s core values.

Cal Poly fraternity Pi Kappa Alpha and seven sororities stepped up to the plate this weekend, literally.

Sunday marked the first Emergency Services Appreciation Day, in which Cal Poly’s greek life teamed up with local police officers and firefighters to play in a charity softball game that benefited the Bence Family Austyn Bence Memorial Fund.

Ukrainian journalists visit Cal Poly, local media

The Mustang Daily office received a visit from three Ukrainians in a U.S. legislative exchange program Friday.

The Open World Program was developed to provide Russian and other Eurasians with experiences in American democracy and civil society. Another goal of the program is to promote understanding between the U.

Students fast for faith

“It’s a whole attitude, trying to deprive (myself) of all evil, and trying to present myself with a better image,” architectural engineering junior Marya Mikati said.

For Mikati, a typical day during Ramadan involves waking up at 5 a.m., getting a drink of water, then going back to sleep.

Poly shows its green and gold

 Parents’ Weekend will be held the Friday and Saturday this Homecoming weekend. Tickets for the hike to the Cal Poly P, the Mustang Corral BBQ, the wine tasting and the Homecoming game are sold out, but there will be some free events happening Friday.
