Mattress catches fire in student's Stenner Glen room

A mattress caught fire in a Stenner Glen apartment Monday night, prompting 150 students to evacuate three buildings in the complex. No one was injured.

The San Luis Obispo City Fire Department responded to the call at 11 p.m. from a resident adviser and found flames in a first floor, five-bedroom suite.

Laundry fire causes hotel to evacuate guests

A small fire broke out at the Embassy Suites Hotel on Madonna Road early Monday morning, causing the fire alarm and sprinkler system to go off. No one was injured.

“The fire started in the laundry room when a commercial dryer overheated,” said Tim Billing, the hotel’s general manager.

SLO has a merry little Christmas downtown

Santa Claus arrived at Mission Plaza in a stylish convertible on Nov. 24 to set up shop until Christmas Eve.

He was greeted with a festival at Santa’s House that kicked off the Christmas season. The 50-piece San Luis Obispo County Band performed concert music and local shops Uptown Espresso and Sweet Shoppe provided refreshments.

New state laws to affect students

As soon as the clock flashed midnight on Jan. 1,
fireworks weren’t the only things set off in
California. Several new laws took effect too and some
will benefit students.
Perhaps the most sweeping good news for students is
the 75 cent rise in the state’s minimum wage.

Campus leaders shed light on energy plans

The sun cast down favorable light Thursday as Empower Poly Coalition dedicated the new photovoltaic energy system located on the rooftop of the Engineering West building.

The ceremony took place at 11 a.m. on Dexter Lawn. This renewable energy project is the largest in San Luis Obispo County yet.

Poinsettias aplenty

Cal Poly poinsettia project students will host an open house at the Poly Plant Shop on Friday and Saturday.

Poinsettias are in full bloom and ready to be taken home. With about 3,000 plants and 29 varieties, there are plenty to choose from. All range in color and size with unique names like “Jingle Bells” and “Kris Kringle.

Jamba Juice warns of contaminated fruit in smoothies

San Francisco-based beverage chain Jamba Juice said Tuesday that several of its chain stores located along the West Coast might have used contaminated strawberries in late November.

According to Jamba Juice, a business that originated in San Luis Obispo, one of its suppliers, Cleugh’s Frozen Foods, notified the company last week that routine testing in a Salinas food processing center found that its frozen strawberries tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, a potentially harmful bacteria.

Former professor goes Belgian or bust

Move over French fries. Belgian fries have arrived in San Luis Obispo.

Cal Poly emeritus philosophy professor Fred O’Toole opened the gourmet fry shop Bel Frites with his wife Joyce Connelly and 13-year-old daughter Oona. Bel Frites serves up Belgian-style fries.
