Nude no more: beachgoers may soon have to cover up

Visitors to Pirate’s Cove, the small beach located between Avila and Shell Beach and best known for the nude beachgoers, may have to put on their bathing suits next time.

San Luis Obispo County Parks took the first step to acquire Pirate’s Cove Tuesday at the Board of Supervisors meeting where they issued a notice to the public of their intent to turn the secluded beach into a family-friendly spot.

Poly student's memory honored through programs

Friends and family of Morrey Brown, the Cal Poly student who was found dead at the bottom of a swimming pool in what police called an accidental drowning last September, have created two programs to honor the memory of the student, athlete, classical pianist, poet and community volunteer.

New provost starts, Durgin moved to new position

Bill Durgin, Cal Poly’s provost for the last two years, was moved to a new position as University Executive for Research and External Support while the interim provost, Robert Koob, officially took the reigns Monday.

Koob, now the second-highest ranking official on campus, will have to deal with increasing budget cuts as the economy continues to be unstable.

In going green, Cal Poly makes the grade

The grades are in and the report card is out. The Web site Greenreportcard.org just released new sustainability grades for 300 universities and Cal Poly received a B- in its first year of evaluation.

“In the B’s is probably about right for universities that are moving in the direction of sustainability,” said ASI President Angela Kramer, who based much of her campaign on advocating for sustainable practices.

Alumni site up and running

A year after its launch, PolyLink, Cal Poly’s alumni networking Web site, has experienced great success with over 9,000 alumni subscribed and more on the way. Subscribers to PolyLink range from graduates from the class of 2008 to as far back as graduates from 1937.

SLO airport slated for expansion

Two new construction projects that will lay the groundwork for future renovations at the San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport are underway, thanks to two recent grants.

Bike offenders blame crowded racks

Due to overcrowded racks, students biking to school may have to park farther away then they want, but according to the University Police, that’s just the rules of the road.

Though parking on campus can be difficult at the start of the quarter, students biking to class should think twice before deciding to chain their bike somewhere other than a bike rack.
