Thanks to the enterprising workers at the Cal Poly organic farm, patrons at the Maxine Lewis Memorial Shelter enjoy more than canned foods donated by the community. Students gathered Thursday morning at the University Union Plaza to voice their opinions about the ongoing conflict in the Middle East between Israel and Hamas militants in Gaza.
The late morning rally, which was organized by the Students for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (SJPME), was in response to Israel’s air and ground offensive against Hamas dubbed “Operation Cast Lead” by the Israeli military.
Walsh to replace Ellerson as football head coach
The Cal Poly football team will name former Army offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tim Walsh as its new head coach in a press conference at 10 a.m. today in Mustang Hall, the Portland Tribune reported yesterday.
Walsh would bring 18 years of collegiate head coaching experience to Cal Poly, including 14 years at Bowl Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) Portland State.

They pave Mitchell Park, put in a parking lot
In a 3-2 vote on Tuesday night, the San Luis Obispo City Council approved the proposed construction of a 12-space parking lot behind the San Luis Obispo Senior Center at Mitchell Park.
The approved plan is slightly different from the original Mitchell Park Master Plan that called for a 14-space lot.
Float wins top parade award
The votes poured in and Cal Poly emerged the winner at the 120th Annual Tournament of Roses Parade. Capturing 3,219 out of 10,618 votes, the “Seaside Amusement” float created by the Cal Poly universities of San Luis Obispo and Pomona won the inaugural Viewer’s Choice Award.
Cal Poly alumnus dies over winter break
A recent Cal Poly graduate was found dead in Hawaii over winter break.
Former chemistry student Clay Carlson, 25, was visiting family in Kauai and was found in Anini Stream at the bottom of a 10-foot waterfall on New Year’s Eve, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin reported Tuesday.
