CSU defers fees for grant students

Cal Poly and the rest of the CSU system has decided to postpone payment of spring term fees for all students facing delayed grants from the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC).

Since California lawmakers are currently unable to agree on a budget, the CSU system is not receiving the necessary cash flow to cover all students receiving Cal Grants A and B.

Engineering college reaches out to women

When Jessica Gregory began pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering in 2004, freshmen women only accounted for 11.8 percent of the entering class. She was often the only woman in her major courses. However, due to several programs focusing on increasing female enrollment in engineering, Gregory’s experience may no longer be the norm.

University budget crisis continues

California’s deteriorating economy and budget crisis continues to affect Cal Poly faculty and students as administrators wait to receive the Chancellor’s Office evaluation of the 2009-10 operating budget.

Next year, Cal Poly expects a budget cut of at least $500,000 if Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s budget proposal is approved by the legislature.

Students come from China to master dairy science

The College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences will host the first two students from Shanghai Jiao Tong University this fall in a new joint dual master’s degree program.

The students already have a Master of Science in food science and technology from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and will attend Cal Poly for the second half of a two-and-a-half year master’s degree program.

About 15 students and community members attended a candlelight vigil for victims of the Gaza conflict at the Mission Plaza on Thursday night.

The event, organized by Students for Justice and Peace in the Middle East, billed itself as non-political.

Attendants said they came to mourn both Israeli and Palestinian victims of the conflict.

Alcohol, hazing led to freshman’s death

The death of Cal Poly freshman Carson Starkey last quarter has been determined to be the result of alcohol poisoning. Police have further confirmed that his death was as a result of hazing and the party Starkey had attended the evening before his death was an initiation event for the fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon, which he was pledging.

Cal Poly students package green future

Three Cal Poly programs have launched a program that has students working with major companies to deal with environmental issues facing the packaging industry.

Cal Poly’s industrial technology department in conjunction with the Orfalea College of Business and the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences started Cal Poly’s Consortium on Packaging Science and Technology to offer research and development services to an impressive list of companies, including Microsoft and Safeway, to design packaging materials that are sustainable and eco-friendly.

Forum on Gaza conflict invites student discussion

Students will have the opportunity tonight to participate in an open discussion regarding how the latest war in Gaza began.

Stephen Lloyd-Moffett, a professor for the Cal Poly Religious Studies Program, will present “The War for Gaza: Why Now? What Now?” to discuss the causes of conflict and the implications for long-term peace.
