Cal Poly, nation focus on a sustainable economy

Students interested in the future of sustainability shouldn’t miss the second annual Focus the Nation on campus this week from Tuesday to Thursday.

This year’s event will focus on building a sustainable economy while informing both students and faculty about an emerging industry devoted to tackling climate change.

Exhibit to honor equal rights activists

To honor the historic struggle for equality in accordance with Black History Month, Kennedy Library will be hosting an exhibit entitled “Strive and Struggle: Documenting the Civil Rights Movement at Cal Poly, 1967-1975.” The free exhibit will feature Mustang Daily articles from that time period and will be displayed in the first floor gallery of the library from Feb.

Drinking debate educates, stimulates student discussion

More than 100 students and community members assembled in Chumash Auditorium last Thursday to hear a debate that involved each and every one of them: The Drinking Age Debate. John McCardell and James Fell spoke about the pros and cons a lowered drinking age would have on society.

Memorial bike ride will honor Starkey’s life, passion

A memorial bicycle ride will be held Saturday at Poly Canyon in honor of late Cal Poly freshman Carson Starkey by the Cal Poly Wheelmen Cycling Team.

Starkey passed away last quarter while pledging the fraternity Sigma Alpha Epilson, reportedly from alcohol poisoning.

The drinking-age debate comes to Poly

The issue of lowering the legal drinking age from 21 to 18 has long been in discussion. Would there be repercussions in society if 18-year-olds were given this right or would young people accept their new-found freedom and exercise it responsibly? The next installment of ASI Events’ True Life Series will explore this very issue when The Drinking Age Debate comes to Chumash Auditorium Thursday at 8 p.

Business students now preparing free income tax returns

It’s that time of year again, when many people would rather roll over and play dead than go through the hassle of filing taxes. Luckily, help will soon arrive for Cal Poly students and local low-income families in the form of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA).

New program teaches students about police life

The University Police Department is holding a new type of training course for students interested in learning more about the role of police officers in throughout the county.

The course goes from March 31 to June 2 with classes held once a week. Applicants will practice live action training in traffic collision investigations, crime scene investigation, and domestic violence issues as well as tour the county jail.

Economy brings fewer recruiters to job fair

Students have the opportunity to meet with representatives from over a hundred companies today and tomorrow at the Winter 2009 Job Fair.

The two-day event, which seeks to connect job-seeking students with prospective employers, will be held in the Chumash Auditorium.

Device gives visitors virtual glimpse of Poly

A new Global Positioning System (GPS) self-touring device called the GPS Ranger has been introduced by the Cal Poly admissions department as a supplement to the Poly Reps tours. Cal Poly is the first college or university in the nation to use GPS Ranger technology to provide campus tours to the public.

All shapes and sizes: New club promotes body acceptance

After suffering from an eating disorder at the end of her freshman year of college, Cal Poly communications junior Jamie Engelhardt decided to to start a club to help prevent others from going through the same thing.

Engelhardt took a year off so she could fully recover from anorexia nervosa and since returning to school has been in the process of forming the Coalition for Health, Wellness and Body Appreciation club.
