Cal Poly’s learn by doing philosophy really shouldn’t be in effect when you’re drinking at a party during the upcoming break. We all know that it is “unlawful for any person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage to drive a vehicle” in California.
Popera revamps classics
Urban Dictionary defines “popera”as “a merging of the musical terms and styles of ‘pop,’ or popular music, and opera. A classical-crossover sound,”according to its Web site.
Cal Poly’s music department is bringing this unique musical style to audiences tonight with the premiere of “Popera at Poly,” a special performance combining classical and popular music.
Anderson Cooper's journey of survival
“I was ten when my father died,” Anderson Cooper wrote to open his new book. “Before that moment, that slap of silence that reset the clock, I can’t remember much. There are some things, of course – fractals, shards of memory, sharp as broken glass.”
Cooper is distinguished by his piercing blue eyes, his silvered hair, and his globetrotting reporting on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360ยง.
Directions for dancing across campus
Two left feet? Not to worry. No experience and no partner? They’ve got you covered. Cal Poly has its very own dance clubs with weekly lessons for folks just like you. The Cal Poly Swing Dance Club has two lessons every Sunday on campus for $1 each. Intermediate lessons are from 1 p.
A pirate's life for she
Does the term “female pirate” call to mind Keira Knightly standing on a beach jumping up and down and screaming “Stop it!” at a dueling Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom? If so, it’s time to get your hands on a copy of “She Captains” by Joan Druett. It’s no secret that pirates are currently a hot topic, but aside from the ever-popular pirate wenches, the phenomena is strongly male-focused.
Ballads from the bands
Cal Poly’s University Jazz Bands are presenting the Cal Poly Fall Jazz Concert this Friday in the Alex and Faye Spanos Theatre.
“Two big bands and two combos will present “a fresh and spontaneous approach to jazz, America’s great original art form,” according to a press release.
A review a long time coming
I can’t really explain why this review has gotten put off for so long. Port O’Brien’s new EP “Nowhere to Run” has been hovering around the station and the town in general for a little while. During that time, I’ve seen them play twice. Still, the album only just found its way over to me sometime this week when I found it sitting on a cabinet in the station.
I'd like to prepare a toast
“Three be the things I shall never attain: Envy, content, and sufficient Champagne.” This was spoken by Dorothy Parker and I really can’t say I disagree. If diamonds are a girl’s best friend, then Champagne must be everyone else’s. Doesn’t it always seem that when something great happens, Champagne is always around? But where does it come from? How do they make it? And where do the bubbles come from? All these questions will be answered by effervescent means.
The DJ of a stifling dance scene
I did my second DJ set for a dance party on Saturday. Don’t consider that an advertisement because truly I don’t have skills like many others I know. I just tend to have extensive musical knowledge and a lot of self-perpetuated hype.
At the same time though, it really doesn’t matter to most people.

South African wines bring you back to the wild
So what’s the hype with South African wines all about? Relatively new on the American market, these wines are beginning to emerge in the international race for wine sales. With 3.1 percent of world consumption, this African country is ranked the ninth most popular wine country in the world.
