Cal Poly University Jazz Band gets into the swing of things

Duke Ellington, one of the great jazz musicians, once wrote in a song with the same title, “It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing.” If his words still ring true, then the Central Coast is in for a treat.

This Friday, jazz-lovers and dance-enthusiasts alike will find their match as Cal Poly’s University Jazz Band No.

HBO's 'Big Love' makes waves

About a year ago, HBO started airing commercials for its next big family drama, “Big Love.” The antithesis to the Sopranos version of family love, “Big Love” focuses on the inner workings of a modern day polygamist family.

“Think having three wives is a dream come true?” taunts the show’s tongue-in-cheek teaser.

Soulful musician Tyrone Wells comes to Cal Poly

Up-and-coming singer and songwriter Tyrone Wells will perform music from his new album “Hold On” today during UU Hour, continuing his nationwide tour.

With a sound that Scott Warren, a member of his management team, calls “a mix between Jack Johnson and Lenny Kravitz,” Wells has experienced increasing success as a musician, gaining popularity through live performances and plays on the radio.

One small step for woman, one giant step for women filmmakers

She may be best remembered for her baby-voiced, sex-pot roles in cult classics such as “Chasing Amy” and “Mall Rats,” but 38-year-old Joey Lauren Adams has recently added another title to her Hollywood name: writer/director.

Adams’ directorial debut “Come Early Morning” is a homespun tale about a successful, 30-something construction manager who, according to interviews with Adams, “is somewhat less successful when it comes to her romantic relationships.

20 years later means a whole new world

“Children of Men” is a film in which its premise alone is enough to keep you talking for hours. When it comes to actually executing that premise, however, is it enough to deliver it solely through a restless visual experience?

Director Alfonso Cuaron (“Y Tu Mama Tambien”) believes it is, and his latest visually enthralling sci-fi film doused in delightful pessimism could prove it.

Starting the year off right

Last Saturday brought Boy’s Night Out which meant a noise rock show at the Steynberg Gallery. Strangely enough, the crowd was rather decently sized as Indian Jewelry headlined the show coming off of an extensive tour. Additionally surprising was that this was one of the best shows that I’ve seen in a while.

Christmas movies for guys who like movies

With finals around the corner, it means that Christmas vacation is on the horizon (fine, “holiday vacation” for the P.C.). If you’re not working during this break then you’ll be sure to find yourself reuniting with that comfortable indentation on the living room couch, hanging out with your favorite holiday buddy: the television.

What's on your wish list this holiday season?

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 These are both the hot new gaming systems out. With great graphics and multiple capabilities, they make current and prospective gamers very happy. The Xbox 360 will probably be easier to get this year because there is a little time between its release date and the holidays, but they will go fast anyway.

Last-minute holiday gifts they will love

When you were little, you probably gave your parents gifts like a still wet, glue-glittered plate that no one could eat off of – and your parents loved it. But now that you’re older, it’s usually more difficult to find a present that makes the same smash hit.

Wind ensemble's innovative style travels the world

For more than 30 years, the 60-piece Cal Poly Wind Ensemble has performed in some of the most famous venues in four continents.

Despite being made up of mostly non-music majors, the group has earned an international reputation for music excellence and is continuously invited to play at renowned conventions and festivals throughout the world.

The Greatest Sites: Where do they go from here?

Everything epic must come to an end at some point; the Roman Empire, Harry Potter’s life (yeah, he’s dead) and even mustangdaily.net’s “Greatest Sites Series.” We’ve learned a lot from our friends at eBaumsworld, SomethingAwful, CollegeHumor and Fark and I thought we’d take a look back at some of the important points made by the leaders of the growingly popular world of humor sites and where exactly they are headed.
