The rise of the douche

We got rules that tell us who we oughta be. Open your books; let’s study douche-i-otomy. Right now, we are witnessing the rise of the douchebag. Well, sort of. The douchebag is not really a trend, because he’s always been around. Historically, there have been some major douches – Napoleon, Hitler, Ivan the Terrible, Nixon.

Cinco de Mayo Celebrations

Though Cinco de Mayo falls on a Monday this year – hardly the best party night – there’s no reason not to celebrate the day. Whether you’re after cheap food, discounted drinks or live entertainment, San Luis Obispo offers everything you need to celebrate the fifth of May this year.

A film definitely worth skipping

There is usually good reason behind a movie going straight to DVD, and “Senior Skip Day” is no exception. The movie attempts to mix “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” with “American Pie” and fails miserably. Don’t the writers know there is an unwritten rule to never mess with the classics? (“Senior Skip Day” is so bad that it causes “American Pie” to be categorized as a classic.

Movie previews for 5/2

The summer films lineup has started and Marvel looks to start it off with a bang.

GTA IV brings back the fun and controversy

Let me cut right to the chase for those who don’t already know – “Grand Theft Auto IV” is killer in more ways than one.

Everything that fans of the video game series have come to know and love – the violence, humor, superb dialogue and non-linear game play – has remained intact, but a plethora of new features have been added to the mix.

Rats fuse modern rock with Celtic styles

Portland-based singer Casey Neill and the Norway Rats, which includes Jenny Conlee of indie rock band The Decemberists, will play a show at San Luis Obispo’s City/County Library – the actual library, not THE Library for all you booze hounds out there.

Casey Neill and the Norway Rats claim to fuse modern rock with punk, Americana and Celtic styles, and are currently promoting its third album, “Brooklyn Bridge,” which was released almost one year ago.

'CATS' is PURRRfectly wonderful

Break out the scratching post and the kitty nip. “CATS” has come home to rule the roost, or in this case, Cal Poly’s Performing Arts Center.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s masterful stage adaptation played to packed houses Wednesday and Thursday nights, leaving smiles on the faces of young and old alike.

Funny ladies? Love them!

Last weekend, I (and apparently the rest of the movie-going public) went to see “Baby Mama” and, to my chagrin, I was pleasantly surprised. Although Tina Fey has consistently proven her power to successfully entertain the public with her written and performed contributions to “Saturday Night Live” and her series “30 Rock,” I wasn’t certain that “Baby Mama” would appeal to anyone in the 18-25 demographic.

Five of SLO County's top burrito spots

What’s better than having a large, warm, delicious and carefully prepared meal? Having that wonderful meal wrapped in an equally tasty tortilla thus making a burrito, the food of the gods. However, not everyone can make the perfect burrito, and Chili Peppers is only good if you’re drunk.

Matmos: a supreme sampling

Few artists, if any, match the conceptual intensity, experimental mentality and pop sensibility of Matmos. Its aesthetic is advanced, one that transcends comparisons but remains accessible and enjoyably detached from its conceptual origins. Matmos consists of Drew Daniels and M.

Saturday Night Live, Cal Poly style

For some, comedy is something to indulge in occasionally, say, on Thursday nights with episodes of “The Office” or when a favorite comedian comes into town. But for the members of Cal Poly’s Smile and Nod improv team, comedy is a way of life. The club, formed ten years ago by Cal Poly alumnus Mark Sitko, is comprised of 20 members, all of whom devote their free time to practicing and performing.
