Poly-nesian rhythms: Hula classes offered

Cal Poly students can say “aloha” to Hawaiian culture through the beginning hula dancing class offered this summer.

The class, which is being sponsored by the Cal Poly Hawaii Club, is open to students and members of the public.

Instructor Sylvia Hambly explained that the hula is more than just a dance; it’s also a way to remember Hawaiian history.

Gritty tales of the city

After a potentially career-ending interview with Oprah regarding falsities in his so-called memoir, “A Million Little Pieces,” James Frey crawled into a hole and hid from his disappointed fans, and the entire disgusted literary world.

Or did he? With the release of his new novel, “Bright Shiny Morning,” Frey seems to have been writing up a comeback for some time.

Google it on the go

In a fast-paced world that continues to be transformed by technology, not only do we continuously want to be connected to the Web, but in most cases, our lives demand that we be.

Google is a company that caters to that need for connectivity – possibly because it created the dependency in the first place, or perhaps because they understand that not all of us can own an iPhone.

Olive: A new taste of Central Coast

The Central Coast is known for its local flavors: chardonnay, cabernet and pinot noir to name a few.

However, fine wines are not the only delicacies available for sampling. For some, top-notch olive oil and balsamic vinegar have become the new wine, and San Luis Obispo’s We Olive offers customers the chance to sample away.

Hulk smash… hit

Bruce Banner and his angry, giant, green alter ego are back after a five-year hiatus in the reincarnation of a Marvel comic book legend, “The Incredible Hulk.”

Banner, the quiet and reserved former Department of Defense scientist who suffered from severe gamma poisoning after a failed experiment is played brilliantly by Edward Norton.

Concerts in the Plaza heats up

Thousands have gathered for the Concerts in the Plaza series, which kicked off its 13th season on June 13 when local band Still Time performed their “face-melting groove rock.”

Every Friday, local talent performs at San Luis Obispo’s Mission Plaza, where music, dancing, food and fun meet.

Indie flick channels "Rambow"

What happens when you combine a quirky young artist, a misunderstood troublemaker, and a video camera? Mix in some ’80s fashion and little to no parental supervision, and you get a homemade sequel to the classic Rambo flick, “First Blood,” appropriately titled, “Son of Rambow.

The best music you never heard

From Bob Marley to Stevie Wonder to Jimi Hendrix, singer/songwriter Kierstin Gray is influenced by many different genres. Next week, she will bring her unique blend of sounds to the Clubhouse in San Luis Obispo.

“I am really inspired by eras and periods of music, so my tastes run a wide gamut,” the 28-year-old musician said.

Feature: Time for the real world

Graduation marks a time of transition for many Cal Poly students, including members of local band Still Time, who will shelve their chosen careers at least temporarily as they follow their dreams of becoming full-time musicians.

Members of the popular local band are unofficially done with their education this year.

How to make your cap sparkle

Shhh . I’m going to let you in on a little secret: my mortarboard (you know, that hideous cap-looking thing us graduates have to wear at the ceremony) is going to be better than yours. And it’s all because of my fabulous craft skills.

See, this weekend I’m decoupaging the Sudoku page of this lovely publication (and maybe some other pretty things) to my cap.

Bring poetry to the streets

Anthem, Cal Poly’s annual poetry slam competition, returns tonight for another year of toe-tapping, grooving poetry exploring racial, sexual, ethnic and class identities.

The slam, which pits seven nationally recognized poets against each other in a competition-style format, seeks to explore the power of words.
