The appearance of hip-hop MC Immortal Technique, best known for his revolutionary spirit and lyrics dealing with politics, poverty, religion, and racism, was part of Summer Skool Fest at Downtown Brewing Co. last weekend.

Bad craziness, great documentary

He was hailed as the founder of “Gonzo” journalism. He was revered as a counterculture icon. Now, the late Hunter S. Thompson has been immortalized on the big screen in Alex Gibney’s documentary, “Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson.”

Thompson is thoroughly celebrated in this film, which focuses on his journalism career’s peak years and finishes with the late years of his life leading to his suicide in 2005.

Getting creative in the kitchen

Wearing a black apron in her brand new kitchen, Ashleigh Hutchison quickly sliced juicy red-orange peaches before placing them on a platter filled with fresh red raspberries and a goat cheese log rolled in toasted almonds. She drizzled honey over the entire plate and placed it at the bar beside fresh snap peas and other snacks.

Celebrating women in art

For 34 years, the Central Coast’s most creative women have come together in celebration of their art, craft and sound.

On Saturday, August 9, the celebration begins anew as the Day with Creative Women returns to Mission Plaza in San Luis Obispo.

The fundraiser, which benefits the Women’s Community Center, is set to have over 100 local women at booths selling homemade products.

Local kitchen studio has grand opening

The Garden’s Kitchen Cooking Studio in San Luis Obispo will open its doors to the public in a grand opening doubling as a charity fundraiser Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.

Ashleigh Hutchison, the kitchen’s owner and operator, said she came up with the concept of the studio after having lived in, and been exposed to, the food culture of San Francisco and Hawaii.

The bat is back in black

Christopher Nolan’s new Batman movie, “The Dark Knight,” has had more than just a veil of buzz surrounding it, and for good reason. This movie is amazing. It touches base with so many different emotions that to place it in just one genre would be a crime.

That’s right, this film may be an interpretation of an action-packed comic book, but matching pace with all of the explosions and shootings is a deeper plot and one hell of a cast.
