UCSD grads create funny video site

The next time you are in need of a good old-fashioned belly laugh, look no further than your computer. Hilarious comedy sketches are a click away at ThoseArentMuskets.com, a Web site created by UC San Diego graduates Michael Swaim and Abe Epperson.

“Those Aren’t Muskets!” is a young comedy troupe with “nothing to lose, and everything to prove,” led by head writer Swaim, who attributes the name of the group to a line from Star Trek.

Still Time livens up the Main Stage

There was something a little different going on at the west end of the San Luis Obispo Farmers’ Market last Thursday night. The local band Still Time, formed by Cal Poly and Cuesta College students, got people singing, dancing and jumping at the normally sedate market end.

Costume Capers back up and running

For nearly a quarter century, Central Coast residents in need of a funky costume knew exactly where to go.

But seismic retrofitting put a damper on the area’s largest costume shop, as Costume Capers was forced to leave its downtown home on Chorro Street after 23 years and quickly relocate.

Getting in the Delta Spirit: San Diego band coming to SLO

Just days after gracing a San Luis Obispo stage, San Diego rock-and-soul band Delta Spirit will make its TV debut on the Late Night with Conan O’Brien stage on Sept. 3.

One of the band’s first summer performances to promote its new album, “Ode to Sunshine,” will be at Boo Boo Records in downtown San Luis Obispo for an in-store show August 27 – the day after the album’s re-release.

Wine snobs move over, we've got beer

Some may consider beer a less sophisticated beverage than wine, but on the Central Coast, privately-owned breweries are an alternative to the plentiful wineries.
Central Coast Brewing (CCB) on Monterey Street has created a reputation for its premier brewing facilities and variety of hand-crafted microbrews and signature ales, including its most popular flavor: chai, said CCB’s Head Brewer Jeff Sorenson.

Presto's new album lacking

Capitalizing on the talent of some of the genre’s godfathers, hip-hop producer Chris Douglas (stage name: Presto) may well just have the needed star power behind him to get an audience for his new album, “State of the Art”.

The young producer has yet to cross the threshold to greatness, even as artists including Sadat X of Brand Nubian fame, CL Smooth and Pete Rock, and O.

'Pineapple Express': A train wreck

“Pineapple Express,” written by Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg, is the latest film to emerge from the Judd Apatow fun factory and, dare I say, it wasn’t that much fun.

Meet Dale Denton (Rogen) and prepare to be un-amazed. As with every role Rogen plays, he doesn’t stray too far from his preexisting, laid-back, charming loser profile.

Multimedia: Cuesta Ridge at Concerts in the Plaza

Cuesta Ridge, a local Central Coast band, performed at San Luis Obispo’s concert in the plaza. With a “new grass” feel that mixes traditional blue grass with a modern, rock twist, the band had the crowd on its feet from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Click the image below to see photos, hear interviews, and listen to audio of the event.

Chain-stores and downloading threaten the future of the independent record store

When Morninglory Music, a record store in downtown Santa Barbara, recently closed its doors for good, owner Stan Bernstein attributed the decision to the growing number of people who download music illegally online.

But in San Luis Obispo, independent record stores see another problem: commercial retailers.

Traveling music

Brothers Char and Robby Rothschild of Round Mountain filled Linnaea’s Café last Thursday night-not only a plethora of musical sounds, but a spirit of harmony and oneness with nature.

The small venue provided the perfect backdrop for what was truly a diverse and spectacular display of musical ability, meaningful lyrics, and catchy beats from their newest album, “Truth and Darkness,” as well as music from their first album “Round Mountain.

The upside of down

Despite interludes of discouragement and depressive storytelling, “Stay Positive,” the newest release from bar-rock group The Hold Steady, manages to uphold the album’s namesake.

Utilizing, in varying proportions, two guitars, bass, drums, keyboards and the raw vocal energy of Craig Finn, the band also manages to blur the lines of what would conventionally be considered classic rock with pop instrumentals and punk oomph.
