German movie nights break down walls

Cal Poly’s Modern Languages and Literatures Department will show a series of German films for students interested in a deeper analysis of the culture.

“A Nation Through the Lens: Historic Events in German Film” will showcase 11 films Wednesdays 8 p.m. to 10 p.

Russian ballet company brings Cinderella to the PAC

Cinderella will tip-toe into Cal Poly on her glass slippers Tuesday as the State Ballet Theatre of Russia presents their version of the classic ballet.

More than 40 different ballet companies have produced adaptations of Cinderella since 1901, and there have been over 1,500 versions of the tale of Cinderella created over time.

Multicultural Center to host poet Prentice Powell for “Another Type of Groove”

This month’s “Another Type of Groove” will feature slam poet Prentice Powell, whose poetry focuses on issues like social justice and race. His performance will be among many campus events in honor of February’s Black History Month.

Powell was the 2007 Black Music Awards Spoken Word Artist of the Year and 2006 Oakland/San Francisco Grand Slam Champion.

Comic review: I am a disappointed nerd

When social sciences sophomore Linda Qiu began her internship last year with online fashion blog Chictopia.com, she never imagined that she would appear in a national American Apparel clothing advertisement. The ad featuring Qiu is a testament to fashion going in a new direction: for the people, by the people.

Dance troupe makes ‘Impact’

The Orchesis Dance Company, Cal Poly’s oldest concert dance organization, will return to Spanos Theatre this week for their 39th annual winter dance show.

This year’s concert, entitled “Impact,” will combine the company’s unique blend of jazz, hip-hop, ballet, tap, ballroom, lyrical and modern dance styles with new visual techniques that are bound to surprise and intrigue audience members.
