The Cal Poly rugby club’s activities are on hold after administrators learned of a student allegedly being assaulted by at least one member of the team, according to a New Times report.
The alleged assault occurred at an off-campus gathering this past weekend, the report says, and all team activities are on hold in the meantime, including Cal Poly’s home game that was scheduled to take place Saturday against UC Santa Cruz.
University spokesperson Matt Lazier said administrators received the report this past week.
“The university is in contact with the San Luis Obispo Police Department, which is conducting an investigation into the incident,” Lazier told New Times. “…Cal Poly’s Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities is also conducting an investigation into the matter, which will involve meetings with the complainant and members of the rugby team and will take into account the results of the San Luis Obispo Police investigation.”
All team activities will be suspended as the investigation unfolds.
Entering the season, the team was ranked 10th nationally by RugbyMag.com and are scheduled to play six more home games. Cal Poly’s next game is scheduled for Feb. 1 at UC Davis.
Correction: A previous version of this story said the entire rugby team is under investigation, which has been changed to say only their activities are on hold. The incident was also referred to as a “rugby party,” but it was an off-campus gathering.
