Motorists in San Luis Obispo should expect to change their driving routes this week as Project Higuera will have several blocks downtown closed for repaving scheduled through Wednesday.
Tuesday will have Higuera Street closed from Morro Street to Broad Street, as well as Garden Street from Higuera to Marsh streets.
Chorro Street will be closed from Marsh to Monterey streets.
On Wednesday, Higuera will be closed from Osos to Chorro streets, and Morro Street will be closed from Marsh to Monterey streets.
“Recommended navigation around the project is controlled by festive signage,” said Brent Vanderhoof, administrative assistant at the San Luis Obispo Downtown Association.
“(It) directs traffic around the ongoing work and lets people know that all businesses are open and ready for patronage.
“Work will be complete in time for all of our Thursday night market areas as well as this Friday’s high school homecoming parade,” he said.
Project Higuera was approved by the San Luis Obispo City Council in a recent budget process after downtown Higuera Street was recognized as being in need of repairs. The expected project completion date is Nov. 5.
Upon completion, motorists can look forward to what Project Higuera’s slogan promises as a “New Street, Nice Extras.”
The new pavement will consist of a high-strength fiberglass surface that the city hopes will result in less cracking and increased street longevity.
As added benefits, Project Higuera will also include curb repair, revamped storm drains and fire sprinklers. There will also be “new” old-fashioned streetlights to add to the historic downtown atmosphere.
Roadwork began Sept. 4 and has resulted in partial and full street closures of selected city blocks.
Project Higuera so far has consisted of grinding off old paving and making needed repairs and installations prior to repaving.
