The Cal Poly Recreation Center is being renovated; the construction is occurring in phases.
Originally, the Recreation Center opened in 1993 but with the increase in student population, overcrowing has meant frustration as students and other users wait for equipment or to use the gym facilities.
In February 2008 the Cal Poly student body voted in a referndum to increase the quarterly fee to expand the center. This fee will not go into effect until the renovation is completed, which is estimated to be in June 2012.
New components of the center include a tripled exercise space, a wellness center, an indoor jogging track and a leisure pool.
