J-Boog’s most popular song title is fitting for his upcoming San Luis Obispo stop.
He’s coming to SLO Brewing Co. on Jan. 24 … and it won’t be for the first time.
J-Boog has performed at the venue “many times before, more than five,” said Jessica Puchli, SLO Brew events and promotions supervisor.
But all of the booths still sold out really quickly for this J-Boog show, she said. Because of this, Puchli is expecting a large over-21 crowd, even though the show is an all-ages event.
“His fans, naturally, are really excited,” Puchli said. “I’m expecting high-energy good times with a slightly older, hip-hop reggae crowd.”
Graduate student Gillian Schoenfeld fits this bill. She first saw J-Boog this past year when he opened for Rebelution at SLO Brew.
“I found his music very soulful, and I loved the unique Hawaiian feel to it,” she said. “The harmonies were awesome. I’m really excited to see him again this week.”
J-Boog, former member of R&B group B2K, hails from Compton, Calif., but is known for blending his California roots with Hawaiian reggae flavor.
Philosophy senior and longtime fan Allen Litvak says, because of this, J-Boog’s sound is a mix between old and new school reggae.
And, Litvak said, J-Boog’s vibe is “different than a lot of R&B music.”
“I feel like a lot of the usual themes you find in mainstream R&B are money, sex, drugs, alcohol, materializing women,” Litvak said. “But J-Boog spreads messages about love and respect, messages about being yourself. I think his music is a lot more real than the usual R&B you hear, so I wouldn’t want to miss the opportunity to see him live.”
Los Rakas will open for J-Boog. The up-and-coming Panamanian duo hails from the Bay Area, and its bilingual tunes reflect hip-hop, plena, reggae and dancehall influences.
The show is set for 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $18 in advance and $20 at the door. All ages are welcome.
