The Cal Poly wrestling team will test its mettle as it competes in Las Vegas today and tomorrow at the 25th annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Wrestling Invitational.
The team has been hard at work preparing for the tournament, and coach John Azevedo is confident the Mustangs “should do very well, go there and place. It’s going to be a battle.”
Azevedo said the team has a number of top-ranked wrestlers, so he expects the team’s performance to be one he’s proud of.
“The guys have been getting their work in,” he said.
At their only tournament of the season so far, the 19th-ranked Mustangs topped team standings at the Fullerton Open on Nov. 18.
Cal Poly will compete this weekend with schools such as Arizona State, Oregon State, Michigan, Nebraska, Harvard, Boise State, Cal State Bakersfield and others for a total of about 50 teams.
Competition begins today at 9 a.m. with a short pigtail round, then at 10 a.m., rounds one and two begin, and consolation matches for the pigtail round will be held at the same time at the Star of the Desert Arena.
