A Cal Poly freshman was discovered dead in a swimming pool Thursday night in what police are calling an “accidental drowning.”
According to police, kinesiology freshman Morrey Brown and his three roommates had been playing basketball that afternoon on the grounds of the Los Verdes Park housing development, located on Los Osos Valley Road near Higuera Street. When his three roommates decided to go back to their house, Brown stayed in the pool.
“After 10 to 15 minutes, he didn’t come back and his roommate found him at the bottom of the deep end of the pool,” said Lt. Steve Tolley of the San Luis Obispo Police Department.
Brown had been swimming alone and was discovered dead at about 6:30 p.m., police said, adding that alcohol did not appear to be a factor in his death and there were no signs of foul play. After unsuccessfully trying to revive Brown, he was transported to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center.
“We don’t know if it was a medical condition that caused something to happen,” Tolley said. He estimated that Brown’s autopsy results would be available in two to three weeks and that Brown’s family has been notified.
Brown originally hailed from Washington where he graduated from Kentridge Senior High School last spring. He was a member of the Cal Poly track team.
