How do you get to Carnegie Hall?
“Practice, practice, practice,” animal science junior and Polyphonics singer Sarah Reggiardo said.
And that is exactly what Cal Poly’s Polyphonics choir has been doing in preparation for their performance at one of the world’s most iconic music halls.
“This will be my first time to New York and first time performing on a New York stage, which has always been something I’ve wanted to do,” Reggiardo said.
The group leaves Sunday morning and will perform at Carnegie Hall on Tuesday.
They will also be singing at the City University of New York and in Philadelphia.
The performance at Carnegie Hall is part of the World Projects 2014 New York Choral Festival.
For electrical engineering senior Christopher Tan, this performance will bring back memories.
“Last time I was in New York, I performed at Carnegie,” Tan said.
On that trip, he sang with his high school choir as a freshman.
“I spent the first few minutes gawking, looking around at the hall and how vast it was,” Tan said.
Performing on that big New York stage doesn’t come without at least a few nerves.
“It’s definitely nerve-wracking when you get up there on stage,” Tan said. “But the moment you start, and you hear that first note when you start in, that’s when you’re focused.”
Polyphonics is performing pieces in English, Japanese, French and Arabic.
“My musical horizons have just been totally expanded,” Reggiardo said.
The Cal Poly Arab Music Ensemble will join Polyphonics in New York and perform with them at Carnegie Hall.
The performers said after more than a year of preparation, they can’t wait to finally be in New York.
“’Excited I think would be an understatement,” Tan said. “We’ve been getting really antsy this whole quarter for this.”
For Reggiardo, performing in New York is a dream come true.
“I’m looking forward to hearing applause while I’m standing on Carnegie Hall stage,” she said.
