The University Police Department used fire extinguishers to put out a small fire on campus likely caused by a discarded cigarette butt near the intersection of Highland Drive and California Boulevard on Monday.
The fire stretched to approximately 20 feet by 20 feet, Cal Fire investigator Zach Nichols said. UPD officers ran over with fire extinguishers, putting out the flames before Cal Fire reached campus.
Though the fire occurred in a patch of bushes, the smoke resulted in a brief road closure on California Boulevard.
