UPDATE: 5:32 p.m.
After contacting the officer sent to investigate Wednesday at the Cal Poly Recreation Center, Cal Poly Chief of Police George Hughes wrote in an email to Mustang Daily that an unknown male was allegedly using his iPhone to take photos or record video of women using cardio machines at the facility Tuesday.
A patron of the Recreation Center told an ASI staff member about the man, but when staff confronted him, the man denied taking any photos and left the center, Hughes said. ASI employees at the center did not contact police following an unsuccessful search for the man.
Anyone with information surrounding the incident is asked to call university police at (805) 756-2281.
Original Post:
University police and Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) are investigating a report of a person allegedly taking photos of women at the Cal Poly Recreation Center earlier this week, Cal Poly Chief of Police George Hughes said Thursday.
In an email to Mustang Daily, Hughes wrote, “it appears someone was possibly taking photos of women working out.”
Wednesday’s campus police log lists a suspicious person at the Recreation Center sometime between 4:30 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Hughes said a sergeant was sent to investigate the incident shortly after police received a tip Wednesday afternoon.
Policies for the Recreation Center on ASI’s website state that, “no photography, either by camera or cell phone, is allowed except with prior written approval.” ASI President Katie Morrow said she was made aware of the situation on Thursday, and that ASI would take such a concern “very seriously.”
