Sophomore forward Brian Bennett led the Cal Poly men’s basketball team with a season-high 11 points and nine rebounds, but the Mustangs dropped an 82-61 decision to No. 14 Oregon on Sunday night in Eugene, Ore.
Cal Poly, playing its third game is as many days at the Global Sports Hardwood Challenge hosted by Oregon, dropped its second straight game after a 73-71 loss to Pacific on Saturday. The Mustangs (2-5) won their opening game of the tournament with a 70-43 drubbing of North Dakota on Friday and finished 1-2 in the round-robin format.
Against Oregon, the Mustangs shot 40 percent from the field but hit just six of 27 attempts from beyond the arc in a loss to the fourth-highest ranked opponent the program has ever faced.
Senior guard Kyle Odister hit a 3-pointer early in the game to knot the score at 7, but Oregon then went on a 13-2 run in the next 3:30 to open an 11-point lead that the Mustangs would never overcome.
Richard Amardi and Elgin Cook led the way for Oregon as both scored 14 points off the bench. The Ducks shot 48 percent from the field including a 47 percent mark from behind the arc.
Cal Poly returns home to face Santa Clara on Saturday before hosting Cal State Dominguez Hills on Dec. 14.
