The rare arrival of rain on the weekend of the Cal Poly baseball team’s series against USC resulted in rain-outs on Friday and Saturday before the teams finally saw action with a doubleheader this past Sunday. Each team entered the series with a 7-1 record.
Cal Poly opened the series with a 5-1 victory, but was stunned in the nightcap with a 16-0 loss to the Trojans.
An opening in the clouds allowed junior left-handed pitcher Matt Imhof to face USC’s Wyatt Strahan in a matchup of the teams’ aces in the first game.
Imhof continued his solid start to the season with seven strikeouts in as many innings to earn his second win of the year.
Cal Poly was led to victory on offense by senior catcher Chris Hoo, who brought in two RBIs in the afternoon contest.
However, the Mustangs struggled in the second game as the USC offense pounded Cal Poly freshman right-handed pitcher Slater Lee. USC’s offense produced 16 hits, while their pitching staff allowed just two Cal Poly hits.
Lee was called off the mound after just 2 1/3 innings as he conceded five earned runs off three hits with no strikeouts.
No. 13 Cal Poly will face Santa Clara in a one-game series at Baggett Stadium on Tuesday before traveling north to face Seattle University in a weekend series.
