The Mustangs hit the road this week for a pair of game on the East Coast. The second and third game of a six-game road trip. Cal Poly will first take on Florida International on Friday, Sept. 11 and then play Florida Atlantic on Sunday, Sept. 13. Both games will be played in Boca Raton, FL. The Mustangs enter the week with a 1-3 overall record after picking up their first win of the season with a 2-1 decision over Seattle this past Friday. The Mustangs returned to the field on Sunday, falling 2-1 at Cal State Bakersfield. Florida International enters the week with a 1-2-2 record while Florida Atlantic is 1-4 and will host North Florida before entertaining the Mustangs.
Upcoming:
Following the game with Florida Atlantic on Sunday, Cal Poly will remain on the road with a trip to Colorado for a pair of games. The Mustangs will visit Air Force on Sept. 18 and Colorado College on Sept. 20. Air Force enters the week with a 1-4-1 and play at Saint Louis on Sept. 13 before hosting the Mustangs. Colorado College is 2-2 and will play Texas Christian University, University of Kansas and the University of New Hampshire before hosting Cal Poly.
Florida International:
Florida International enters the game with the Mustangs with a 1-2-2 record. FIU has not won or scored since opening the season with a 3-0 win over Stetson. FIU has had two ties, Florida Gulf Coast and South Florida. In the team’s last game, Central Florida defeated the Golden Panthers 5-0. Thaisa Moreno, Kassandra Sorzano and Mayara Bordin have each scored goals for the Golden Panthers, but Deana Rossi has taken the most shots on the team with 11, six on goal. Two goalies have split time in net for FIU with Melanie Raimo earning three starts and holding down a 0.34 GAA. Kaitlyn Savage has played nearly the same time earning one start with a 1.84 GAA. Thomas Chestnutt is in his third season as head coach of the Golden Panthers.

Cal Poly holds a 1-0 advantage over Florida International in the all-time series. The Mustangs defeated the Golden Panthers 5-0 in the teams only match last season.

(Sept. 14, 2008) SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly exploded for five goals, four of them coming in the first half, to roll past Florida International, 5-0, Sunday afternoon before 505 fans at Alex G. Spanos Stadium. Ashley Vallis, Julianne Grinstead, Tiffany Gummow, Afton Thulin and Emily Hein all scored for the Mustangs. The Mustangs got on the board first in the 14th minute as sophomore Morgan Miller played a ball from the top of the goal box to senior Ashley Vallis, who put the shot into the bottom-left corner of the goal for her second score of the season. The Mustangs second goal came in the 31st minute, when junior defender Grinstead headed-home a corner kick from senior Leah Morales to make the score 2-0. Just nine minutes later the Mustangs scored again, as freshman Gummow scored her team-leading third goal on a blast from 30 yards out that ducked under the crossbar and past Golden Panther goalkeeper Raimo. With just 25 seconds remaining in the half the Mustangs tacked on another goal as junior Carissa Voegele sent a pass to Thulin from 9 yards out. Cal Poly out-shot Florida International 15-1 in the opening half. Freshman Brooke Gauvin replaced Hoover in goal to start the second half and played into the 85th minute, making two saves in her first-career action. Fellow redshirt-freshman Johanna Pfeiffer replaced Gauvin for the remainder of the game as she also took the field for the first time. In the 81st minute the Mustangs capped off the victory as senior Hein stole the ball from a Golden Panther defender and beat the charging FIU keeper for her first goal of the season to complete the 5-0 victory. The Mustangs out-shot FIU 10-6 in the second half and 25-7 for the game.
Florida Atlantic:
The Owls enter the week with a 1-4-0 record and will play North Florida before facing the Mustangs. The Owls picked up their first win of the season in game No. 3, a 3-0 decision over Ball State at home. Ashley Mannarino has scored two of the team’s three goals this season with Breanna Lewis scoring the third. Mannarino has taken a team high nine shots with seven on goal. Ashley Lantes has made four starts between the posts and has a 1.67 GGA. Ashley Parrinello has made one start with action in two games and has a 2.83 GAA. Brian Dooley is in his 11th season at FAU.
vs. Seattle:
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Two second-half goals by the Cal Poly women’s soccer team overcame a one-goal deficit and gave the team its first win of the 2009 season. With the 2-1 win, the Mustangs improve to 1-2-0 for the year while Seattle University suffers its second loss and falls to 4-2-0. Kaleena Andress’ first goal of the season in the 72nd minute proved to be the game winner. Andruss took a long feed from Kristina Condon-Sherwood deep in the left corner and fired a ball into the right top side of the net over the outstretched hands of Seattle goalie Madison Goverde. The game-tying goal came in the 68th minute from Morgan Miller, her first of the season, when she settled the ball near the top of the box and beat the goalie as she came out to challenge her. Seattle got on the board first in the 24th minute of play when Kate Edstrom fired the ball from 35 yards out only to have Edstrom deflect it in for her third goal of the season. Hoover picked up her first win of the season with five saves, with Goverde collecting nine for Seattle. For the Mustangs, their 11 shots doubled the number from the first two games, nine coming in the second half while Seattle totaled 12 shots, nine in the first half. Seattle had seven corer kicks to Cal Poly’s one but was whistled for six fouls to the Mustangs’ three.
at CSU Bakersfield:
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Sept. 6) — Cal Poly scored early, but was unable to hold the lead as Cal State Bakersfield scored two first half goals in defeating the Mustangs 2-1. With the loss Cal Poly falls to 1-3 on the season while CS Bakersfield improves to 3-3. The Mustangs lone goal came 2:56 into the game when Monica Hemenez corralled a lose ball and scored off a rebounded save by CSUB goalie Kym Gause. The CSUB goalie had made a save on a shot by Miller. The Mustangs nearly made it 2-0 when Miller settled the ball and hit the crossbar at 15:40. CSUB tied the game at 28:03 when Sam Pena hit a shot from 25 yards out beating Gauvin. The Roadrunners scored the game-winner late in the first half (41:03) when Faith Perry hit a shot from 25 yards out, just inside the far post, for the team’s second goal and a 2-1 lead. The Mustangs made a late charge with three shots on goal in the final two minutes of play, but was unable to convert. Both teams had 16 shots with the Mustangs getting 11 on goal compared to CSUB’s four. Gauvin tallied eight nine saves in the game compared to just two for Gause. Bakersfield took 10 corners compared to the Mustangs one while Cal Poly was whistled for 18 fouls compared to CSUB’s nine. Condon-Sherwood led the Mustangs with four shots, two on goal while Miller and Hemenez each added three shots.
Opponent Shots:
After allowing a combined 61 shots against the first two opponents, both ranked, the Mustangs have only allowed 28 in the last two games. Seattle took 12 shots, seven on goal while CS Bakersfield took 16 shots, four on goal.
Cal Poly shots:
Cal Poly had a combined 11 shots after the first two games of the season …. they doubled that against Seattle and took 16 against Cal State Bakersfield … in the second two games, 21 were on goal… they had only six in the first two games.
Goals and shots:
Condon-Sherwood and Monica Hemenez lead the team with six shots each with each on goal three times … Miller has taken five shots, three on goal.. but Julie McKee has taken four shots with all four on goal.
Hoover:
Hoover has started both the Mustangs home games and has faced a total of 23 shots with 20 saves. Hoover has a .870 save percentage and a 1.50 GAA.
The record:
Last season the Mustangs posted a 10-9-1 overall record and were 5-3 in Big West contests. On home games, Cal Poly was a mediocre 4-5 in Alex G. Spanos Stadium, but was 6-2-1 on the road. Neutral games the team was 0-2.
This season:
1-1 at home and 0-2 on the road.
Crozier reaches 200:
With the Mustangs 1-0 defeat of Cal State Northridge on October 12, 2008, head coach Alex Crozier was successful in his first attempt at reaching the 200-win plateau. Now in his 18th season, Crozier is the all-time coaching wins leader in Big West Women’s Soccer history and has been named the conference’s Coach of the Year four times. He also became just the 32nd coach in NCAA women’s soccer history to reach 200 wins (minimum 10 years coaching at Division-I). Entering Friday’s opener, Crozier’s record stands at 202-105-34.
Preseason Big West Polls:
The Cal Poly women’s soccer team has been selected by the Big West Conference coaches to finish third in the 2009 standings. The Mustangs earned 65 points and a first-place nod. Crozier’s Mustangs finished 10-9-1 overall and in third place in Big West play in 2008. Cal Poly also welcomes back a quartet of all-conference honorable mention members in Miller, Condon-Sherwood, Voegele and Hoover. The UC Santa Barbara women’s soccer team was selected to win the 2009 Big West championship in a vote of the nine coaches. The Gauchos claimed five first-place votes and 75 points to capture the favorite’s role. Three-time defending Big West regular season champion Long Beach State accumulated 67 points for second place. The 49ers received two first-place tallies. After Cal Poly was Pacific with 53 points and one first-place vote. Cal State Northridge followed in fifth with 33 points and Cal State Fullerton was sixth (32). Rounding out the poll were UC Irvine with 31 points, UC Davis with 28 and UC Riverside with 21.
