
The Cal Poly women’s tennis team plowed their way through the Cal State Fullerton Intercollegiate tournament this weekend, as singles players Brittany Blalock and Steffi Wong facing off on Sunday morning. The tournament featured 64 players from eight teams.
Steffi Wong easily moved her way through the rounds with victories over Brandy Andrews of Cal State Fullerton 6-3, 6-4; Sandra Kukla of Cal State Northridge 6-3. 6-3; and Donna McCullough of UC Riverside 6-1, 6-3; and finally Jill Damion of UC Santa Barbara 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 in the semi-final round leading up to Wong’s face-off with No. 2 seeded teammate Brittany Blalock.
Blalock moved into the finals with a bye in the first round; a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Nina Joworowski of CS Northridge; a 7-5, 6-4 win over Jessica Weeks of Long Beach State; and a 6-4, 6-4 win over teammate Peterson.
As of press time, the results for the match between Wong and Blalock were not yet available.
In singles, Cal Poly teammates Brooke Pletcher and Diana Flipi faced off in the first round of singles, with Pletcher coming out on top with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 victory.
Shannon Brady beat out Breanna Stowell of Cal State FullergonFullerton with a 6-0, 6-1 win in the first round before upsetting No. 3 seeded Kanykey Koichumanova of CS Northridge 6-1, 6-2. Brady then fell to Deborah Armstrong of Long Beach State 7-6, 6-2.
Amy Markoff defeated Lisa Haegele of Long Beach State 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 before being defeated by Damion of UCSB 6-4, 7-6.
Whitney Peterson easily moved through the rounds, with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Julie Onishenko of CS Northridge; a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Asagi Onaga of UCSB, and a 6-2, 6-3 win over Erynne Oki of UCR.
Peterson finally lost to teammate Blalock in the quarterfinals, with Blalock coming out with a 6-4, 6-4 victory to face teammate Wong.
As doubles partners, Blalock and Wong received a bye in the first round; beat out Lynott and Macias of Santa Barbara 8-0 and then Damion and Onaga of UCSB 8-1.
As of press time, no results were available for their match against Weeks and Armstrong of Long Beach State.
Cal Poly’s Markoff and Pletcher won their first round agains Inijikian and Inglis of Cal State Fullerton 8-6, then fell to Weeks and Armstrong of Long Beach 8-5.
Doubles team Brady and Malec fell in the first round to Shih and Welliver of UCI 8-4.
Peterson and Filip advanced 8-4 over Nixon and Heckel of Loyola Marymount before falling to Grady and Bengson of Long Beach State 8-2.
The Cal Poly men’s tennis team participated at the 2007 Fresno State Bulldog Classic Oct. 5-7, resulting in only one singles player, Alexander Sonnesson, making it through to the final day of the tournament.
Sonnesson had a bye in the first round of singles and moved into the consolation bracket on Friday after losing to Maxiem Adam of Fresno State 3-6, 2-6. Sonnesson played Jose Munoz of San Diego in the consolation quarterfinals and defeated him 6-3, 6-1, continuing into the tournament on Sunday. Sonnesson’s results for Sunday were not yet available at press time.
Rob Foy claimed the Mustangs’ only Friday win against UC Davis’ Matt Jaqiello with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. On Saturday Foy was defeated by Siddharth Alapati of Fresno State 7-5, 6-4.
In doubles, Foy and Sonnesson were defeated 9-8 in the competition against Dahan and Stewart of California.
Cal Poly’s Drew Jacobs lost 4-6, 1-6 to Fresno Pacific’s Vicente Jolly on Friday, and then moved on to a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Dahan of California on Saturday. Jacobs moved into the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket, but again lost to Charl Wolmarans of San Diego 4-6, 3-6.
UC Santa Barbara’s Jack Hui defeated Cal Poly’s Andy Gerst 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 during the first round.
Blake Wardman lost 6-4, 2-6, 2-6 to Dave Chu of Washington in the second flight of singles, moving him into the consolation bracket where he recovered with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Austin Kakar. Wardman’s victory moved him into the quarterfinals, where he lost 5-7, 6-4 to Michael Reiser of UC Davis.
Robert Zachs was defeated 6-2, 6-0 by Gabe Kanzelmeyer of Nevada on Friday and moved into the consolation round, where he was defeated by Victor Medina 6-1, 6-4.
Jacobs and Wardman had a bye in the second flight of doubles, then played Kanzelmeyer and Myard of Nevada, where they were defeated 8-5.
On Saturday Cal Poly’s Darryn Young was defeated by Fresno State’s Tejesvi Veerepalli 6-0, 6-2 in the consolation bracket of flight-one singles.
Young and Gerst lost to Fafek and Leiby of Fresno State 8-2 in doubles competition on Saturday.
