Ryan ChartrandFormer Cal Poly pitcher Garrett Olson picked up his first big league win for the Orioles against the White Sox Sunday in his second Major League start for the organization.
Despite giving up two solo home runs in the fourth and sixth innings to Chicago slugger Jermaine Dye, Olson managed to give up only six hits and struck out four after facing 23 batters in five-plus innings on the mound.
Olson had a no-decision in his debut, also against the White Sox, on July 4.
He is the probable starting pitcher for Baltimore on Saturday.
Bruce wins big in El Salvador
Former Cal Poly distance runner Ben Bruce took top honors in the 5,000-meter event with a time of 14 minutes 27.9 seconds at the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association Championships in San Salvador last weekend.
Bruce currently holds the Cal Poly record in the event with at time of 13:40.9 set in 2005.
Cal Poly senior Sharon Day also competed at the event.
Day took fifth place in the high jump event, clearing a height of 5-8 3/4, over five inches short of her season-best of 6-2 ¬ set at the USA Track and Field championships in June.
Day is scheduled to compete on Team USA at the Pan-American Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Chicoine contributes in Japan
Former Cal Poly free safety Kenny Chicoine wrapped up play in the World Championships of American Football held June 7-15 in Kawasaki, Japan.
Chicoine had an interception, pass deflection and a blocked field goal in USA’s championship win over Japan on Sunday.
He was credited for five tackles and a fumble recovery against Germany on July 12, and he picked up a tackle in the US team’s opening game against Korea on July 10.
Chicoine led the Mustangs with five interceptions last season and also harvested 255 all-purpose yards from punt and interception returns.
The World Championships are played every four years. The U.S. team handed Japan its first championship loss since the event started in 1999.
