
The Cal Poly men’s tennis team won both its matches at home over the weekend to wrap up the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Big West Conference Championships.
With their 4-0 win over UC Riverside on Saturday and 4-3 victory over UC Irvine on Sunday, the Mustangs finished the regular season with a record of 10-12 overall and 4-0 in the Big West.
In its only scheduled match over the weekend, the Cal Poly women’s team was eventually rained out on Senior Day against Santa Clara after taking a pair of points in singles play.
Both Cal Poly teams are at the Big West Conference Championships in Indian Wells from April 27 to 29, although the women’s team has one more regular-season match remaining – at Fresno State at 11 a.m. Saturday.
For the Cal Poly men’s team, which has won three straight matches, freshman Rob Foy went 2-0 in singles play over the weekend. He won 6-2, 6-2 against UC Riverside and 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 against UC Irvine.
Against UC Irvine, the Mustangs also got singles points from senior Matt Baca (7-5, 7-5), sophomore Darryn Young (6-1, 5-7, 6-3) and doubles wins from Baca and senior Kyle Roybal (8-5) and sophomore Nick Berger and junior Fred DeWitte (8-5).
In the UC Riverside match, Cal Poly got singles wins from DeWitte (6-3, 6-0), Foy and Berger (6-1, 6-0) and doubles points from Foy and Young (8-2) and DeWitte and Berger (8-1).
Cal Poly men’s first-year head coach Justin McGrath guided Louisiana-Lafayette to the NCAA Tournament in 2006 and Arkansas to the NCAA tourney in 2001 and 2002.
Before the Cal Poly women’s team had its match rained out Saturday, it got singles wins from freshmen Steffi Wong (6-2, 6-0) and Melissa Bradford (6-1, 6-1). The Mustangs remained 7-10 overall.
