The Cal Poly men’s soccer team registered its second-straight victory against UC Riverside with the help of junior Patrick Sigler’s overtime goal that put the Mustangs on top 1-0. The win also opened Big West conference play for Cal Poly and stretched the men’s soccer winning streak against UC Riverside to five games.
Sigler’s shot from just inside the penalty box came only a minute into overtime on a give and go with senior David Zamora, giving Zamora a team-leading fourth assist.
The win moved Cal Poly to 4-3-1 overall and handed UC Riverside its sixth loss and second in conference.
The first half was a defensive exhibition as only three shots on goal were taken. The second half saw UC Riverside goalkeeper Nick Goldreich, along with the crossbar, turn Cal Poly away multiple times. Senior Junior Burgos found iron twice while Goldreich stopped Zamora on two headers.
Cal Poly keeper, junior Brett Finkelstein, posted a six save shutout, his highest total of the season.
The Mustangs look to go 2-0 in Big West play at home on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. against Cal State Northridge.
