The Cal Poly men’s basketball team used a team-high 12 points from senior guard Jamal Johnson to beat Cal State Fullerton 58-56 at Titan Gym on Thursday night.
With the win, the Mustangs (8-19, 4-1 Big West) solidified their best start to Big West play in program history.
Sophomore forward Brian Bennett added 10 points while junior guard Maliik Love and forward Joel Awich poured in eight apiece.
Cal Poly led from the opening bucket, but Cal State Fullerton trimmed the advantage late before Awich’s 3-pointer with three minutes remaining ultimately decided the game.
The Mustangs shot 48.9 percent from the field and went 7 of 12 from beyond the arc while the Titans (6-12, 1-3) hit 43.8 percent of their field goals.
Cal Poly sits in second place behind UC Irvine after the Anteaters topped Cal State Northridge earlier Thursday.
The Mustangs continue their two-game road trip with a matchup against UC Riverside on Saturday and come back home next Thursday to face UC Davis. Tip against the Highlanders is set for 7 p.m.
