The Cal Poly men’s basketball team dropped a 63-46 contest at Fresno State on Wednesday night, marking the Mustangs’ largest margin of defeat so far and their third straight loss.
Having lost to No. 5 Arizona on the road and to Nevada in the 2013-14 home opener, Cal Poly is still looking for its first win of the year.
Fresno State, which owns two victories against Big West Conference competitors this year, moved to 3-1 on the season.
Both squads were neck and neck through the opening eight minutes of play, as the Mustangs jumped out to a 10-9 lead despite shooting 29.6 percent from the field in the first half. The Bulldogs would score 20 points in the next eight minutes, finishing out the half with a 12-point lead over Cal Poly.
The Mustangs answered back in the second frame, narrowing the difference to five points in the early part of the half.
But Fresno State pulled away once again, this time without much contention from Cal Poly. The Bulldogs — shooting 40 percent from the floor on the night — scored 32 points in the second half compared to the Mustangs’ 27.
Senior Chris Eversley led the Mustangs with 14 points and seven rebounds, but Cal Poly connected on only 2 of 17 3-pointers. Sophomore wing David Nwaba also notched double-digit points as he scored 11.
Cal Poly plays host to Bethesda on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Mott Athletics Center.
A week later the Mustangs will travel to Eugene, Ore. for the Global Sports Hardwood Challenge, which includes a contest with No. 17 Oregon on Dec. 1.
Big West Conference play begins on Jan. 9.
