Cal Poly men’s basketball head coach Joe Callero and Cal Poly Athletics recently announced the addition of Trevor John, a 6-foot-3 guard from Danville, Calif.
The Monte Vista High School product led his team to a 32-1 record and the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Division I state championship in his senior season, while averaging 15 points and 8 rebounds during the season. He tied a state record in the CIF championship game, hitting six 3-pointers in Monte Vista’s 66-55 victory.
Described as a player with immense shooting ability and a very high basketball IQ, John will likely fit well in the Cal Poly program. The Mustangs were ranked fifth in the nation last year in turnovers per game (8.9) and rely heavily on outside shooting.
John gained many accolades during his high school career, including an All-California first team selection and Contra Costa/Tri-Valley Regional Player of the Year honors in his senior season. The four-year letterwinner helped Monte Vista to a 93-21 record in his four seasons and finished as the school’s all-time leader in 3-pointers.
Jay John, Trevor’s father, was the head coach of Oregon State (2002-2008) and has been an assistant at multiple Division I college programs.
The Mustangs gained national attention last year after their Big West Championship and appearance in the second round of the NCAA Division I Tournament. The national attention and name recognition will surely lead to a tougher non-conference schedule, something the Mustangs implemented last season. The tough games led to a less-than-stellar record, but gave the team valuable experience in tough, high-pressure situations.
