In expected fashion, Chad Mendes and Sharon Day were named Cal Poly’s 2007-08 Athletes of the Year on Tuesday night. Well deserved.
Men nominated for the award included: Brent Morel (baseball), Titus Shelton (basketball), Phillip Reid (cross country), Ramses Barden (football), Brycen Wagner (golf), K.J. Lenehan (soccer), Peter Kline (swimming), Andrew Gerst (tennis) and Chris Frazeur (track and field).
On the women’s side were Megan Harrison (basketball), Kimberly Donatelli (cross country), Julia Heath (golf), Melissa Pura (softball), Gloria Benefield (swimming), Brittany Blalock (tennis) and Chelsea Hayes (volleyball).
The school’s scholar-athletes of the year were Lenehan and softball player Robyn Kontra.
Other highlights of the evening were Barden’s suit (voted the best at the media’s table), Reid’s mohawk and Cal Poly’s PA announcer mistakenly lauding Lisa Modglin at one point.
Speaking of the diamonds, there was a great feature in today’s Record Courier about soon-to-be Mustangs catcher Jordan Hadlock, who wasn’t in attendance.
