The spike in warm weather temperatures certainly isn’t characteristic of San Luis Obispo. Without air conditioning in most student housing where can you go to escape the heat? If the sweltering 96 degree heat is getting you down, here are some suggestions on how to have a little fun — and cool off — while this heat wave lasts.

Cool Treats
As many students know, San Luis Obispo has quite the selection of frozen yogurt and ice cream shops. For the people who already get it on a regular basis this is just an excuse to have more.
If you are downtown there are many shops within a few blocks; maximize the treat and minimize the amount of walking. Frozen yogurt shops are plentiful with Bali’s (949 Higuera St.), Yogurt Creations (1075 Court St.) and Country Culture Yogurt (746 Higuera St.). If you’re looking for something other than frozen yogurt there is G’s Italian Freeze (1126 Morro St.), Foster’s Freeze (590 Marsh St.), Jamba Juice (876 Marsh St.) and Coldstone Creamery (860 Higuera St.) just to name a few.
If you are between classes and need a quick cool down, The Avenue offers a frozen yogurt bar. Lucy’s Juice is just around the corner and offers a wide variety of fruit smoothies. Campus Market sells pint’s of creamy Cal Poly made ice cream as well. Iced drinks are available at Starbucks, Julian’s Patisserie, Peet’s Coffee and Tea and Einstein Bros. Bagels.
Cool Places
If Pismo and Avila beach are too far or if you are staying on campus, take a trip to the Recreation Center. The Olympic size pool is definitely inviting on a day like this. The pool is divided up with an area for lap swim and a shallower area for basketball, games or just wading in the water. Keep in mind others will have the same idea. If it is too crowded many apartment complexes as well as on campus Poly Canyon Village have pools.
Next to the Rec Center pool there are sand volleyball courts. It may be a little warm on the feet but with so many people around it will be easy to start a pick up game.
If you would rather be inside with the air conditioning cranked, a movie might be a good idea. Downtown theatres include Palm Theatre (817 Palm St.), Downtown Centre Cinema (888 Marsh St.) and the Fremont (1025 Monterey St.).
Remember what ever you choose to do stay hydrated and use sunscreen!
