Cal Poly men’s basketball assistant coach Omar Lowery is leaving the Mustangs to take an assistant coaching job at San Jose State, leaving a four-year tenure as one of the team’s key recruiters behind.
News broke Thursday of Lowery’s departure, nearly a month after he helped the Mustangs to an 18-14 (12-6 Big West) record last season and a postseason berth to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament, where the team fell to Weber State 85-43 in the first round.
“I want to thank head coach Joe Callero, Director of Athletics Don Oberhelman, President Jeffrey Armstrong and the Cal Poly community for four great years. Words cannot express how thankful I am for my time here at Cal Poly,” Lowery said in a release. “I’m excited about the future of the Cal Poly men’s basketball program. The program is filled with talented players and coaches and I see another great year and postseason berth in the near future.”
In the four years Lowery coached the Mustangs, Cal Poly went 63-63 (37-29) and finished in the top half of the Big West standings three times.
Off the court, Lowery served as the Mustangs recruiting coordinator.
“The most difficult part of this decision is leaving behind a great group of student-athletes with whom I’ve had the privilege of mentoring and coaching the last four years,” Lowery said. “I have personally witnessed the growth of these student-athletes and the relationships and friendships I’ve created at Cal Poly go far beyond the basketball court.”
