“King Lear” is set to come to the Performing Arts Center (PAC) stage Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. The play, presented by Cal Poly Arts, will feature the Shakespearean actors of the traveling Globe Theater from London.
According to director of Cal Poly Arts Steve Lerian, the internationally known theater company doesn’t tour often.
The company agreed to stop in San Luis Obispo to extend its original tour, which at first only included Santa Barbara.
“The fact that we have the opportunity to present them is a big deal,” Lerian said.
Starring in “King Lear” is Joseph Marcell, who played the butler on the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.”
“Most people know him for his pop culture fame, but he’s also an incredibly accomplished Shakespearean actor,” Lerian said.
For those unable to make the Tuesday night show, there will be a special one-hour version of the play for Cal Poly students the following morning. Students just have to show up to the PAC on Wednesday at 10 a.m, and it’s free.
Cal Poly Arts has hosted only approximately three Shakespeare productions over the last six years, making King Lear a relatively rare opportunity for Cal Poly students.
Student rush tickets for Tuesday night’s show are available for $10. Students should bring cash and purchase their tickets at the door, beginning one hour before curtain.
