Local band Sparrows Gate will perform in the University Union Plaza on Feb. 27.
Comprised of five members and six different instruments, the band has been making music on the Central Coast for 12 years.
The band members, who live together in a house off U.S. Highway 1, practice there in a studio that guitarist and vocalist Paul Dutton engineered.
Zeb and Anthony Zaitz, founders of Sparrows Gate, became fast friends with Dutton, who then joined their band; they’ve been creating music together since 2010.
The best thing about being in Sparrows Gate, Dutton said, is trying out new instruments and having friends come over to lend their voices for background music.
The band has a new album, which was recorded in their home studio and is set to be released this summer.
“This record is probably going to have a lot of different friends (on it),” Dutton said.
This performance will kick off the band’s 10-day tour.
“We looked into them and enjoyed their music,” Associated Students, Inc. musical entertainment assistant and business administration senior Gage McGinnis said. “(The band plays) mellow and fun music for everyone to enjoy.”
McGinnis also said the band is like a folk and rock fusion, comparable to Mumford & Sons or The Lumineers.
Bad weather poses an issue for the concert, though. If it rains, McGinnis said, they’d have to cancel the concert and reschedule it for another time.
In the case of clear skies, the band will perform for Cal Poly students free of charge from 11 a.m. to noon.
