The Cal Poly women’s soccer team, along with sophomore forward Elise Krieghoff, started the 2013 campaign on a tear. The Mustangs won their first four games of the season by a combined score of 15-2, a stretch in which Krieghoff tallied 10 goals. At that point in the year, the Clovis, Calif. native led the nation with a 2.5 goals per game average.
After their red hot start, the Mustangs faltered, losing their next two games to top-25 ranked programs Baylor and Texas A&M, 4-0.
Throughout the first three weeks of the season, Krieghoff earned three straight Big West Conference Women’s Offensive Player of the Week awards and her 10 goals were a program record through the first four matches of a season. She broke former Division II All-American Wendy Jones’ mark of seven goals set in 1993. Cal Poly Hall-of-Famer Kolleen Kassis scored 15 goals to set the Mustangs’ all-time single-season record in 1992.
The Cal Poly women’s soccer team travels to Saint Mary’s College and Santa Clara this week to complete a six-game road trip. The Mustangs will then return home to start Big West Conference play against Long Beach State on Oct. 4.
