Karen Webb, Cal Poly’s associate vice president for administration and finance, will become the interim vice president for administration and finance beginning July 1.
For more than 18 years, Webb has worked a handful of positions at Cal Poly, including the associate director of budget and analytic business services along with assistant vice president and associate vice president for administration and finance.
Webb will replace Stan Nosek, who has served as interim vice president of administration and finance since the end of the last academic year. Nosek, formerly of University of California, Davis, came out of retirement to fill an interim role at UC Davis before coming to Cal Poly.
The search for a permanent vice president of administration and finance is ongoing.
Nosek, who submitted Webb to Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong as his recommendation to take over the position, described the vice president of administration and finance by comparing it to a city manager.
The finance vice president is the chief financial officer at Cal Poly, responsible for keeping track of Cal Poly’s budget, Nosek said. The vice president also fills this role at the Cal Poly Corporation and the Cal Poly Foundation, and oversees campus construction and infrastructure, among other duties.
Nosek identified a number of projects the next vice president will continue to manage.
First among these are staff and faculty salary freezes that have been in place for the past five to six years, Nosek said. The lack of raises is particularly hard on faculty who were hired just as the freeze came into effect. Talented faculty can be hired away by universities that promise better pay and decreased living expenses, Nosek said.
Nosek also said campus maintenance, event management, review of the campus alcohol policy and new housing projects would be ongoing tasks for the next vice president.
