Because I liked the first so much, here’s a second installment of Oh the Places You’ll Go (on the Internet!). These are five places I find fun or interesting, or even both. It’s all subjective opinion, so you’ll just have to click the links to see if you agree or disagree with me.
Etsy
This is a shopping site where artisans and vintage collectors can sell their wares for 20 cents a listing. I buy so much handmade jewelry on here that it’s getting a bit ridiculous—I even have my own shop set up on here. Here’s the mission of Etsy, in its own words:
Our mission is to empower people to change the way the global economy works. We see a world in which very-very small businesses have much-much more sway in shaping the economy, local living economies are thriving everywhere, and people value authorship and provenance as much as price and convenience. We are bringing heart to commerce and making the world more fair, more sustainable, and more fun.
Insomnia Radio
This is a music network that produces blogs, podcasts and streaming/archived independent music. In the sense of full disclosure, the reason I know about this site is because I know the host and founder, Jason Evangelho. Without his site, I would have never found bands like I Fight Dragons or Benjy Davis Project. It’s the place to go for indie music…aside from KCPR, of course. They also have region-based podcasts, with quite a list of places (Portugal, Chicago, New Zealand, UK, and more!)
Cheezburger
This is where all the LOLcats went. It’s a humor site/network where basically all the funny things on the internet go to frolick. Here’s an excerpt from their about page:
Deeply ingrained in Internet culture, Cheezburger is one of the largest online humor publishers in the world where more than 16.5 million people come every month to get their daily dose of laughter.
Here is some of what they offer:
- The Daily What: A collection of interesting/bizarre/awesome links to news, photos and videos.
- Pokémemes: It’s Pokémon memes. How childhood internet appreciating can you get?
- My Little Brony: My Little Pony memes. One of these days I will be writing a whole blog on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic…
- Rage Comics: …you just…kinda need to…click and see…
- Señor Gif: Animated gifs galore!
- Very Demotivational Posters: Self explanatory.
- Failbook: Facebook and other social networking sites and how humorous they can be.
OneLook Reverse Dictionary
Can’t think of a word but remember it’s vague meaning, what it started with, what it ended with, or basically anything that isn’t the world itself? I give you this ingenious search engine. Trying to remember the word that means “to throw out a window”? BAM! It’s defenestrate! Thank you, reverse dictionary!
Rainy Mood
This is kinda like the Quiet Place. It’s just a site with a background of rain slowly streaking down a window with the soothing sound of rain pattering and the occasional subdued roll of thunder. Perfect for people who love rain sounds. Very calming.
Well, that’s all I have for this week. Next week? I freak out over NaNoWriMo.
Again, this article’s title is parodied from a Dr. Seuss book.
