Fraternities in the Interfraternity Council (IFC) are recruiting a new set of brothers this week. Recruitment kicked off Tuesday with a barbecue on Dexter Lawn, where all IFC fraternities set up booths to meet students interested in membership.
Members at the booths provided information on future recruitment events for individual fraternities. Men are encouraged to attend if they are interested in membership.
This is the first time in three years IFC fraternities are allowed to recruit freshmen fall quarter. The lift on deferred recruitment was announced last spring as part of a compromise between Cal Poly and IFC fraternities.
“We decided it would be more beneficial to let go of deferred recruitment and really focus on education and preparation of our students in these environments and hope that we better equip them to make the right decisions when it comes to it,” said Diego Silva, coordinator of fraternity and sorority life.
IFC also brought in a new chapter this year, Nu Kappa Alpha.
This change, combined with the largest freshman class in Cal Poly history, means that fraternities will likely grow. IFC is looking forward to the increase, director of recruitment Riker McClaskey said.
“Our biggest goal this year is to expand the greek life community and get more kids into greek houses,” McClaskey, an agricultural business junior, said.
The 17 fraternities vary in size and social focuses, but they are all looking for pledges who will fit in with their members.
“We want most of our guys just to be able to click with all of our members just so we can get a great brotherhood of guys,” Phi Kappa Psi member and architecture junior Eric Longoria said.
Fraternities will give out their bids on Oct. 15.
