The Cal Poly chapter of Theta Chi invited its national vice president and California lawyer William Palmer to come to Cal Poly to help plan a Greek Row, and he presented at an IFC meeting two weeks ago to propose his idea.
Greek life is already required by the deferred recruitment compromise to have a Greek Row installed by 2023, IFC President and business administration senior Domenic Hjerpe said. Palmer came in as a consultant to help meet this goal.
“Mr. Palmer came as an outside individual, not here to fulfill the recruitment compromise, but to fulfill individuals reaching out to him who wanted more greek housing,” Hjerpe said. “He wanted to bring a solution to the table.”
At the meeting, Palmer explained a plan to install a Greek Row for all fraternities and sororities at Cal Poly, Hjerpe said. Palmer declined to give details about the plan after the presentation because the ideas were still in the preliminary stages.
“Things are fluid,” Palmer said in a phone call to the Mustang News a few days after the presentation.
According to Hjerpe, who attended Palmer’s presentation on a potential Greek Row, Palmer said he had acquaintances in the construction business who would be willing to help push the plan along.
A week after Palmer’s presentation at the IFC meeting, IFC voted to form a committee to work with Palmer on his Greek Row initiative.
Hjerpe said both IFC and himself support Palmer’s plan.
“I think it’s good to have everyone just in one spot,” Hjerpe said. “You can have better internal relations.”
According to Panhellenic president and business administration junior Danielle Durante, Palmer did not meet with the sorority leadership to talk about his Greek Row initiative.
Correction: This article previously stated IFC invited Palmer to campus, when Theta Chi invited him. It has since been corrected.
