The Cal Poly cross-country team headed north this weekend to compete in the Stanford Invitational.
The men’s team came away with a fourth-place finish out of 17 teams, while the women’s team came away with third place of 21 teams.
Coming off his first-place victory at the West Coast Conference preview meet, sophomore Clayton Hutchins continued to lead the way Saturday. Hutchins finished in ninth place of 361 competitors and was just 35 seconds behind the first-place finisher.
Hutchins’ 4:48 pace put him across the finish line in just 23:51. Close behind Hutchins were senior Tyler Huntley (21st at 24:20) and junior Dimitri Voytilla (32nd, 24:28), giving the Mustangs three finishers in the top 35.
The men’s team finished with 105 points, 32 behind first-place Washington State.
In the women’s 6k race, the Mustangs were led by sophomore Mary Jo Wright, who clocked in a time of 21:39, good for 23rd place overall.
Wright was followed closely by four teammates, who all finished in the top 30. Despite no top-10 finishers, the Mustangs were able to secure third place with 117 points thanks to their depth.
Stanford was able to successfully defend its home race, finishing in first place with 71 points.
The Mustangs will next take to the track when they host the Cal Poly Invitational on Oct. 18 at the Fairbanks Memorial Course.
