After months of planning, fraternities and sororities will be hosting the annual Greek Week from May 3 to May 9. There will be various events throughout the week to fundraise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Jack’s Helping Hand.
Some events will be open to the public, while others will be for greek members only.
Business administration sophomore and Interfraternity Council (IFC) Vice President of Communications Justin Rajah helped plan Greek Week.
“Greek Week is this week where all greeks on campus come together for team camaraderie, fun, philanthropy, fundraising and to really unite as greeks,” Rajah said.
This year’s chosen philanthropies are the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) and Jack’s Helping Hand. According to its website, the LLS’ goal is to “cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.” Jack’s Helping Hand is an organization in San Luis Obispo that assists families with ill children.
“It’s a great cause,” Rajah said. “Everyone can come together and compete and have fun, but in the end, we’re doing this great thing.”
Greek Week is organized to have at least one event per day from Sunday to Saturday to either unite greek members or raise money for the philanthropies. Chapters are randomly split up into eight teams that compete against each other during games or challenges throughout the week, Rajah said.
“I’m really excited,” said biological sciences sophomore and Panhellenic Vice President of Programming Morgan Malley. “I think it’ll be fun to have everybody come together. I think the teams will really unify bonds between houses that don’t really know each other very well.”
Teams can host team unity events, such as barbecues or ice cream socials, from May 1 to 4, before the events that require more team cohesion, Malley said.
Greek teams will also participate in penny wars — they will each have a tub team members can put pennies in throughout the week to raise money and earn points. Silver coins subtract from the bin. Non-greek students can participate in the penny wars as well.
