Ryan ChartrandThe San Luis Obispo chapter of the American Cancer Society is getting ready for its 10th annual Relay For Life with a kickoff party at Dolphin Bay Hotel tonight from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Organizers encourage students and community members to get informed about this event.
Liz Grajewski, the American Cancer Society community development manager in San Luis Obispo, said the event is a way for the community to become involved in Relay For Life in the San Luis Obispo area.
“It’s an informal yet intimate event for the community. We have great food that is donated and it is a really laid-back event,” Grajewski said. She encouraged anyone who is interested to come to the event not only in order to learn how to sign up, but also to meet some committee members and survivors.
Relay For Life is a unique 24-hour event that raises funds for the American Cancer Society’s patient service programs, cancer research, advocacy and community education.
Community organizations, businesses and individuals are involved in the event, in which they take turns walking or running around a track but also participate in other fun activities off the track as well.
Cal Poly has its own Relay For Life, separate from the community’s, which will take place on May 17 and 18. Last year, the event took place on Dexter Lawn.
“We will have recruitment rallies and sign-ups soon for the Cal Poly event,” said Jacob Alvarez, Relay For Life recruitment co-chair and psychology junior.
The community event will be in June, but the date and location have not yet been set.
