It’s not your average lollipop.
The Gender Equity Center (GEC) is selling vagina pops — yes, they’re exactly what they sound like — to raise money and awareness about the upcoming Vagina Monologues.
The fundraiser has been around the country for years, said Tammie Velasquez, a Cross Cultural Centers assistant coordinator who works with the GEC. Some organizations make their own vagina pops, but the GEC buys them pre-made.
Besides raising money, the GEC sells vagina pops to make women more comfortable with their bodies, Velasquez said.
However, not everyone is comfortable with the anatomically correct snacks. There haven’t been any formal complaints, Velasquez said, but some people have expressed concerns. Some parents keep their children away from the GEC booth at Farmer’s Market if they don’t want to expose their children to the vagina pops.
But overall, she said, they are well-received and good conversation starters.
The lollipops come in several different flavors, and they are on sale for $2 each. You can buy them from the GEC office or from students who are selling them.
The Vagina Monologues will be performed from Feb. 14-16. Tickets are available for purchase on the Performing Art Center’s website.
