Tom Gallo, vice president of strategic business development for G3 Enterprises and the 2013 Honored Alumnus for the College of Liberal Arts, began his career at Cal Poly.
Halfway through his freshman year, Gallo’s father told him the family business, E. & J. Gallo Winery, was going to start a printing business — and Tom was going to run it.
Gallo, a 1988 graduate of the graphic communication department, spoke Friday on the topic of “Striving for Excellence in Wine Packaging.”
“Success,” he said, “is only achieved by tomorrow’s solutions.”
G3 Enterprises is on the forefront of product innovation, Gallo said. The company has created multiple packaging techniques, including GTREE, an environmentally sustainable wine label made of recycled fiber, which also allows white wine labels to keep their color in water. G3 Enterprises also makes the G SEAL, a wine bottle seal that combines the effectiveness of a cork with the conveniences of a screw top by allowing the bottle to maintain an adequate oxygen transition rate.
With its product innovation, G3 Enterprises has been able to put their motto – “to be the lowest true cost” – into action. The company’s main goal is to make the most effective product for their customers, Gallo said. To do this, G3 uses four product factors: creating a quality product by reducing variation, problem solving by working cross-functionally to develop new products, product innovation and producing a sustainable product that keeps consumer appeal while providing functional performance at a low cost.
G3 Enterprises is located in Modesto, Calif., and was founded by the third generation of the Gallo family with “the vision of expanding services and increasing productivity to better serve the wine and spirits industry,” according to its website.
While the company is headquartered in Modesto, a fourth-generation Gallo family member lives in San Luis Obispo. Gianna Gallo, a senior wine and viticulture senior, is the daughter of Tom Gallo.
“I’m really proud of him,” Gianna said. “It makes me want to do something with my life.”
