Sixteen fraternities have submitted statements against sexual assault within the greek system and at Cal Poly as a whole.
Each fraternity composed unique statements and delivered them to Interfraternity Council president Alex Horncliff to release. Student leaders in Cal Poly’s greek life submitted the Students Taking Action Towards University Safety (STATUS) plan last month, and the plan is still under review.
These statements are voluntary, Horncliff said.
“Chapters were challenged to define their stance on sexual assault and some went as far as to outline clear punishments of confirmed perpetrators,” Horncliff said. “Though these letters in and of themselves are not the solution to the problem of sexual violence, they are a fervent exclamation of the stance that Cal Poly fraternity men take toward that ideal.”
Many of the statements referenced fraternities’ founding credos in speaking out against sexual assault, such as Sigma Pi’s.
“It is in our core beliefs that every woman should be treated as one’s own mother, sister, or daughter,” it reads. “In light of recent events, we have implemented new risk management policies that will help ensure safe social environments.”
