The Cal Poly men’s soccer team made it four wins in a row Sunday afternoon when senior forward Mackenzie Pridham scored a 99th minute game-winning goal to beat Yale 3-2 in overtime.
After trailing 2-0 at halftime, the Mustangs (6-2) scored three unanswered goals to finish off a five-match homestand in which they finished 4-1.
Less than nine minutes into the extra period, Pridham registered his team-leading fifth goal of the season after receiving a pass from Chris Bernardi.
Yale (1-5) got on the board first with a 19th-minute strike from forward Cameron Kirdzik before the Bulldogs extended their lead in the 26th minute with a header from forward Peter Jacobson.
But Cal Poly began its comeback in the 51st minute when senior defender Connor Drechsler headed a free kick from Bernardi into the back of the net to cut the Yale lead in half. The goal was Drechsler’s third career tally in three collegiate shots on goal — all of which have come this season.
The Mustangs tied the match with just 69 seconds left in the contest on a header from sophomore forward Matt LaGrassa. LaGrassa connected with sophomore winger Chase Minter’s pass from the right edge of the 18-yard box sending the game to extra time before Pridham’s eventual winner.
Cal Poly’s 14 tallies in its past four games totals the most goals scored in that span since the 1995 season.
The Mustangs outshot Yale 19-8 on the day and managed 10 shots on frame in comparison to the Bulldogs’ four.
The Mustangs travel to Air Force for a Friday night match and to Denver on Sunday before returning home for the beginning of the Big West Conference schedule on Oct. 4.
